The Cardiff Fire are thrilled to confirm the retention of forward James Matthews for the 2025-26 season.
James, a product of the Swindon Junior Academy, joined the Cardiff Fire last season, where he was an instant hit with teammates. James’ ability to play both ends of the ice often meant he was key on the penalty kill special team and to help see out games.
James will often be regarded for his breakaway specialism, scoring some keys goals on the break, the most memorable being the first in the 2-1 win against Solent Devils last season.

Head Coach Elis Sheppard on the return of Matthews:
James is a great guy who plays the right ways. He is strong on the puck and skates well. He often does a lot of small things which go unnoticed but are key to momentum shifts on the ice. James isn’t afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve and lead. He can play anywhere up and down the lines and is a team first player.
I am excited to see James improve from his season last year and continue to develop into a go to guy for the Fire.
Welcome back to the Fire Family, James #40
