Cardiff Fire are delighted to announce the double signing of dynamic duo Rhys Smetham and Owen Smetham ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The non-British trained pair join the club on a two-way agreement with the Bristol Pitbulls NIHL2 team, bringing a wealth of development experience and proven offensive ability to the Fire roster.
Both forwards boast an impressive hockey background, having spent their crucial developmental years honing their craft in the Canadian junior hockey system. Classified as import players, they are now transitioning their overseas experience back to the UK. Rhys joined the Bristol Pitbulls organisation in 2024 and Owen followed in 2025, quickly adapting to the speed and physicality of the NIHL National League.
22-year-old Rhys has proven himself as a consistent offensive threat over the past two seasons in the National League, registering 56 points (32+24) in 86 games for the Pitbulls.
20-year-old Owen broke into the National League last season and wasted no time making his mark, tallying 20 points (8+12) in 36 games for the Pitbulls.
The Smetham brothers possess an undeniable on-ice chemistry that Fire fans can look forward to seeing firsthand. Their ability to read each other's game was on full display in September 2025 during a dominant 6-2 Bristol victory over the Solway Sharks. In that single game, the brothers combined for a staggering nine points. Rhys earned Player of the Game honours after netting a hat-trick and turning provider with two assists, while Owen secured a brace of his own.

Their careers to date and point production speak for themselves. Having been influential figures in their team last season and seasons before, these signings really are a statement of intent.
Theyβre both key pieces of the puzzle in the growth of the club.
