Craig Thurston returns as new club Captain for 2026-27

Cardiff Fire are delighted to announce the re-signing of forward Craig Thurston for his second season, as Craig is appointed as the new Captain of the club.

Craig split junior hockey with Newcastle Vipers, Bradford Bulldogs and Kingston Sharks, posting impressive figures, notably 29 points in just 8 games in the 2010-11 season. Craig was called up to the ENL2 Hull Stingrays whilst also dressing for their Elite League team in the same season.

Craig is no stranger to this league, playing 94 games between Solway Sharks and Billingham Stars scoring an impressive 80 points, whilst stints in the WSHL, FPHL and EPIHL also add to his impressive resume.

Craig is a natural leader in the room and brings a lot of maturity to the team, taking on the role of club Captain for the new season.

Head Coach Elis Sheppard on Craig's appointment:

Craig started training with the team at the end of the 2024-25 season and I instantly knew I wanted him as part of the team going forward.

Last year, he suffered some minor set backs with injury. We only saw glimpses of what he is capable of and I’m excited what this year will bring.

His professionalism and demeanour in the team and around the young players are the credentials to wear the C this season. I know that Craig will thrive in his role.

Newly named Captain Craig Thurston added:

When I was asked to come back next season, it was an easy decision to say yes. I am excited to see what the new season will bring because sadly getting injured last season, I feel I didn’t get to show my full potential.

It’s also truly an honour to be asked by Stevie to be Captain, a role I won’t take lightly and I hope I can be as good a leader as those have been before me.

I can’t wait to get back to work with the team and hear the roar of our fans again. See you all soon #95

Everyone at the Fire would like to give a warm welcome back to Captain Craig! #95
