Fire sign Sam Smith

Cardiff Fire are delighted to announce the signing of 6’3” forward Sam Smith.

Cardiff hockey fans need little introduction to Sam. As Sam was part of the world record breaking Cardiff Devils team.

Starting his hockey career in Cardiff playing in all the junior age groups Sam made the move to Swindon where he appeared in 4 EPL games for the Wildcats aged just 16. The following season Sam left the UK and joined the Okanagan Rockets in the BCMML in Canada. In his 2nd season there Sam finished top scorer in the academy with 57 points in 52 games. The following season Sam headed to the US to play for the Dubuque Thunderbirds of the CSHL junior league.

In 2010 Sam made his return from North America and signed his first pro contract in the UK with the Cardiff Devils. That season the Cardiff Devils broke the Guinness world record for the number of wins in a row. Sam played on the 3rd line scoring an impressive 36 points in 58 games. Sam also represented GB U20’s that season and also made the long squad for the GB men’s senior team.  A further year in Cardiff followed until he joined the Coventry Blaze for his 3rd season in the Elite League.

After 3 years in the Elite League Sam decided to sign for the Swindon Wildcats in the EPL scoring an impressive 34 points in 47 games. Since then Sam has been living and working in Dubai while also playing hockey in the UAE top league for the Dubai Mighty Camels

Sam Smith added “Very excited to be joining the Cardiff Fire and helping the team to win some trophies this season. I know Cudd and a lot of the team already and hope I can add to an already successful season so far”

Mark Cuddihy continued “Obviously we are delighted to be able to bring Sam into our line-up, not just for his ability on the ice but the way he will fit into our dressing room also. We are big on the dressing room and Sam will hit the ground running on and off the ice. Whilst he was playing abroad (or for other clubs) Sam always used to skate with us pre-season and knows everybody in our team. I was lucky enough to work with him at the Cardiff Devils in 2011/12 season and we have always kept in touch. When he told me he was coming home to the UK I couldn’t stop myself trying to recruit him, he agreed pretty quickly and I am delighted he did. He’s a big body, very quick and lethal in front of goal, he should put up some serious numbers for us. It shows our intent and our ambitions as a club. Sam will be a fantastic addition to our squad”
