Cardiff Fire vs Milton Keynes Thunder
Sunday 16th February | Vindico Arena, Cardiff
On Sunday, Fire returned to home ice confident and ready to take on Milton Keynes Thunder again, for the fourth time this season. The first period opening score and the only goal of the period, was a great opportunistic goal from Fire’s #98 William Thurlbert, assisted by #40 James Matthews and #41 Ben Scanlan, this goal was timed at 14:17.
It was the turn of #43 Captain Lewis Stevens with a quick goal in the first two minutes of the second period. Stevens with the goal and the assist from #8 Louis James timed at 21:56. Just as announcer Chris O’Brien finished announcing that goal, Fire followed it up with another fantastic shot, this time scored by #59 Iwan Davies assisted by #17 Aaron Ragan and #83 Rob Price. There was no stopping Fire, not even a penalty against them when #40 Matthews scored a short-handed goal, assisted by #33 Aaron Moody timed at 27:47. A timeout called by Thunder did not help their team as it only resulted in mistakes and fighting with both teams ending the third period with four players in each penalty box.
With the team all fired up going into the final period with a four-point lead and Fire’s current lead points scorer #27 Carter Lloyd managed to secure another shot into the net, assisted by #98 Thurlbert and #47 Ioan Gunson, timed at 53:35 – Ioan Gunson’s first senior point. A tense final few minutes for Fire as they continued to play at their best at home.
With the buzzer ending the game and Fire not only being triumphant with the win, a solid performance from #41 netminder Ben Scanlan means the first NIHL1 shutout for the team and Ben with 33 saves on the net!
After another consistent and incredible performance, player of the game went to forward #33 Aaron Moody.
An honourable mention must also go to newest signing, on a three-way contract with Cardiff Junior Devils U18s and Bristol Pitbulls NIHL2, 17-year-old Sulley Taylor. Amazing to watch him take to the ice, he put in some great shifts and we will look forward to hopefully seeing him with some more ice time in the future.
As always thanks to all the fans and supporters for attending the game, it was brilliant to see the support for Fire.
