Fire Player of the Game - 23 Yaqub Barnwell

Cardiff Fire vs Romford Buccaneers

Match report by Georgia Thomas

Saturday began with a touching tribute, a minute applause in remembrance of Tyler Hatfield, the son of Slough Jets player Harry Hatfield and his wife Mikala. Tyler was a happy and healthy child who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. Three year old Tyler hated silence so the minute applause was better suited to honour him. The hopes are that this will raise awareness of Sudden Unexplained Deaths in Children.

On to the game itself, the first period saw end-to-end possession that did not equate to any goals. In the second, Fire returned renewed and fought back to equal the even-strength goal from Romford with one of their own. Scored by #9 ‘The Doctor’ Chris Fox, assisted by #33 Aaron Moody, timed at 37:36. This being the only goal for period two, ending the period 1 – 1. The final period resulted in another goal for both teams, Fire’s goal scored by #21 Kris Kasjanovs and was assisted by #34 Bailey Hind-Pitcher, timed at 49:40. Once again evening the scoreboard to 2 – 2 resulting in overtime, where both teams were unsuccessful and forcing a penalty shoot out.

Penalty shot takers for Fire were:

  • 43 Captain Lewis Stevens – no goal
  • 88 Danny Williams – goal
  • 21 Kris Kasjanovs – no goal
  • 27 Carter Lloyd – no goal
  • 34 Bailey Hind-Pitcher – no goal

Fire were on the same track as Romford until there last penalty shot was successful leading them to win the game Due to the drawing of 2 – 2 in regulation time, this means Romford were unsuccessful in making it a three point winning weekend having to share the points, 2 going to the visitors and Fire taking the final 1 point.

Fire were on top form, just unfortunate with the shots at the end when up against Romford’s player of the game, Goalie #35 Max Van Mullem.

Cardiff Fire’s player of the game went to defence-man #23 Yaqub Barnwell, after solid performance throughout the game.

We look forward to playing Romford again this season, for an away game in 2025.
