Cardiff Fire vs Chelmsford Chieftains

Saturday 30th November | Vindico Arena, Cardiff

Match report by Natasha Jenkins

With two games this weekend, one on home ice and the other away, Cardiff Fire needed to start strong and set the mood for the weekend.

The game started strong for Fire with #83 Rob Price scoring the first goal of the game timed at 2:58, Price assisted by Alternate Captain #82 Cedric Racine. Though the Chieftains scored a goal timed at 6:40 to level the playing field. The play from Fire was good, continuous and showed signs of a much more cohesive and secured team, despite a chronically unmanned left wing. It was well fought, until the buzzer, with no penalties given to either team.

Moving into the second period, the game was well played by Fire with the Chieftains lacking the speed and concentration they typically pose on the ice. This period remained quite uneventful until 37:02 when #34 Bailey Hind-Pitcher scored the second goal for Fire assisted by Captain #43 Lewis Stevens. As they did in the first period, the Chieftains levelled the scores once again at 38:55 with another goal. Cardiff Fire received 2 penalties, and the Chelmsford Chieftains received 3 penalties.

Unfortunately for Cardiff Fire fans, period three starts. Cardiff Fire playing as they had at the start of the season, looking like a completely different team in comparison to the last two periods they had just played. The Chieftains, on the other hand, came out with a slightly quicker but more robust performance. Despite being a Fire powerplay, Chieftains scored at 40:16. Taking advantage of a slow defence, the Chieftains scored again at 48:52. A timeout was called at 50:00. Fire took the strategical decision to pull #41 Ben Scanlan from the goal. Chieftains scored an empty net goal at 51:41. The Chieftains concluded the game with another goal timed at 58:41. Fire received no penalties in the final period, but the Chieftains did receive one penalty.

The final score was 2-6, a win for the Chelmsford Chieftains. A score which was not an effective representation of the game which had been played as Cardiff Fire played two very strong periods of hockey which they had been looking for, for some time.

#41 Ben Scanlan blocking a total of 47 goals with a save percentage of 90.38%. Cardiff Fire only making 19 shots on the away goal, with a 10.52% score percentage.

The first two periods were a positive indicator of how Cardiff Fire can play and how they would perform against other teams in this league. #41 Ben Scanlan looking far much more composed in front of the net, which is confidence inspiring for him and his teammates.

Cardiff Fire at Swindon Wildcats 2

Sunday 1st December | Link Centre, Swindon

Match report by Natasha Jenkins

After a short trip down the M4, Fire met with Swindon Wildcats 2. The game started with a Wildcats 2 goal timed at 6:52. The opposition scored again at 19:03. Leaving the ice after period one 2-0 up against Cardiff Fire. Both teams were awarded a penalty.

Swindon Wildcats 2 continued their domination into the second period, scoring the only goal of the period at 39:57. Two penalties were given to Wildcats 2, Cardiff fire was given 3. Cardiff Fire’s first two periods looking polar opposite to the game they had played the previous evening. Unfortunately, the Defence was slow, and some line changes were poorly timed and executed. Wildcats 2 clearly showed that their players were quite simply quicker thinkers when they were in possession of the puck. By no means were Wildcats 2 performing at an immense level. They did, however, take advantage of the holes in the Fire’s game. Fire was given 3 penalties with the Wildcats 2 given 2 penalties.

Thankfully, period three began. Despite starting the third-period 3-0 down, Cardiff fire clearly dominated the final 20 minutes. Cardiff Fire’s first goal of the game was made at 44:09 by #59 Iwan Davies, assisted by #98 William Thurbert and #27 Carter Lloyd. Fire Captain #43 Lewis Stevens followed with another goal at 53:20, assisted by #21 Kris Kasjanov and #34 Bailey Hind-Pitcher. 2 timeouts were called during the period, Fire called their timeout at 53:01 with the Wildcats 2 timeout called at 59:33. Swindon Wildcats 2 scored the final goal of the game at 59:43 in an empty net. Their 30 second timeout strategy proving successful. Swindon Wildcats 2 were given 5 penalties in the final period. Cardiff Fire received 4 penalties to close out the evening.

The evening closed with a 4-2 defeat, a humbling weekend. The final push in the third period unfortunately not proving to be enough for a win.

#41 Ben Scanlan blocking a total of 38 goals with a save percentage of 92.68%. Cardiff Fire made 19 shots on the Wildcats 2 goal, with a 10.52% score percentage.

Both #34 Bailey Hind-Pitcher and #43 Lewis Stevens, leaving the weekend with an assist and goal each.
