Goaltending announced as Mike Brabon returns as GK player/coach and James Whiting re-joins in a new role

Cardiff Fire are delighted to announce that Ben Scanlan and Carwyn Jones become the goaltending duo for the 2022/23 season. Whilst Mike Brabon continues in his role of goalkeeping player/coach.

Also joining as an assistant coach is long serving goaltender James Whiting. James made the decision to retire from playing last season and during the summer it was agreed that James would be joining Elis Sheppard and Chris Fox as an assistant coach.

James Whiting added:

I’m excited to help Elis out on the bench and looking forward to the next chapter in my hockey career, and to be back around the boys. As soon as I made the decision to stop playing I knew I wanted this to be the next step and I’m delighted to be back.

Head Coach Elis Sheppard continued:

I’m really happy to have these guys back in these roles for this season. Ben is technically a very good goalie. He backstopped us to a couple of huge wins last year, including handing Guildford their first loss of the regular season and the ever-important Severn Bridge derby win against Bristol. I anticipate that Ben will continue to replicate that form this coming season and continue to provide the team with opportunities to win the games.

Brabs is also taking up a coaching role this season, which is something I am glad to hear. Brabs brings a wealth of experience to the team, including playing at the top level in Britain. He will also be part of the goalie contingency again this season and with speaking with him; I know he is eager to have a big part in the team.

I’ve known Carwyn outside of ice hockey for a while. His height is advantageous to us in net, but he also has the speed to move post from post like a much smaller goalie. Our goalie contingency this year will push each other to be at their best and I know Carwyn will flourish under this.

Elis also continued on the role James Whiting will be playing in the Fire this season:

I am glad that Moose has decided to still be involved with the team in a coaching role and as goalie injury cover. He is an ever-popular guy in the dressing room and someone I have known since I started playing. He has a great hockey IQ and will be able to assist in improving the team’s dynamic and adaptation of tactics.

Welcome back Ben, Brabs and Moose, and welcome to the Fire family, Carwyn! #FireItUp
