Fire add defensive prospect Yaqub Barnwell on a two-way with Slough Juniors

The Cardiff Fire are delighted to announce the return of defenceman Yaqub Barnwell to the roster for the 2024/25 season.

Yaqub joined Cardiff Fire on a two-way with Cardiff Juniors as a first year Under 18. Yaqub will join up with Slough Juniors for the 2024/25 season, but will retain his two-way with Cardiff Fire.

The 17 year-old prospect had a great first season in senior hockey playing 16 games and scoring his first senior goal. Yaqub has represented Southwest and England in junior hockey and is a highly regarded prospect within the Fire.

Head Coach Elis Sheppard added:

Yaqub was one of the youngest players in the Fire’s history, icing for the team at the age of 16, embodying our ethos of incorporating youthful talent into the team. He reads the game well, is strong in the corners and isn’t afraid to throw his weight around. He has natural ability, and deserves to be tested in the higher league, this season.

Yaqub will also be continuing his development with the Slough Junior Jets, a path I took when I was his age also. I know how the organisation will nurture him and help him grow.

Welcome back to the Fire Family, Yaqub! #23
